Dental examination

A complete dental examination is done when you are new to our dental practice. If this is your first appointment with us, we will advise you to arrive a few minutes early to fill out some paperwork. The paperwork includes a dental and medical history. Once completed, we will welcome you into our dental operatory where we will take your blood pressure and go over any health concerns.

Any necessary digital radiographs will be taken at this time. This will allow the dentist to assess the oral health. We will be looking at bone levels surrounding the teeth, presence of cavities and quality of existing fillings. This is a great time for the dentist and new patient to discuss expectations, goals, concerns and fees. We book sufficient time so our clients do not feel rushed.

Our goal is to make people feel comfortable, respected, and appreciated.

Is this your first dental examination visit with us?

  • We have patient parking – in the alleyway just west of our dental clinic. There are three spots that are marked as Third Street Dental parking.
  • Don’t forget to bring in your dental insurance information. We are happy to help you learn more about your dental insurance and what it provides. If you have the numbers ready at your first visit, we can bill directly to the provider. Many of our clients prefer this, as it saves them from having to collect afterwards.
  • Have you had recent radiographs taken at another office? If so, please let us know in advance. If the radiographs are recent and complete enough, we can do the dental examination without repeating them.
  • Come a few minutes early to relax and fill out our medical and dental history forms.

Check-up FAQ’s

Do you have digital radiographs?

Yes we do! We have replaced our old film radiographs by going digital. This means less radiation to our clients and a better quality of image.

Does this include an oral cancer examination?

Yes it does! The dentist will check your oral tissues for sores, coloring and quality changes.  Any areas that appear suspicious will be referred for biopsy or monitored closely within the following 14 days.

The oral cancer screening is done routinely at your cleaning appointments as well. Early detection is key to a good prognosis, so it is essential to catch the signs of change early.

Will I get my teeth cleaned during this appointment?

We do not always book your cleaning with your first dental examination. The dental examination does allow us to plan your treatment according to your unique oral needs. Thus, booking the cleaning after meeting the dentist is ideal.

However, if you’d like to book the cleaning at the same time, please let us know over the phone when you book this appointment. This way, the appropriate time can be booked with both the dentist and the hygienist.

I'm feeling nervous, is this normal?

It is normal to have some dental anxiety before your appointment. Rest assured that you will feel so much better after meeting our professional team of health care providers. We take the time to get to know you and your expectations.  We do not judge, and share a similar goal of improving oral health. Do not hesitate to call us.
